James’ approach begins by meticulously researching the building, its architecture and history. At the same time how the house is to be lived in and what it needs to achieve practically is explored in detail. In this way a brief is established that combines form with function. James believes that beauty and comfort are prerequisites of any interior, but also places great importance on creating rooms with atmospheric resonance that reflect and harmonise the personality of both the house and the client. With a noted eye for scale, proportion and colour, James uses a judicious mix of antiques and bespoke pieces to make rooms that are at once relaxing and stimulating to be in.
